The Last One

ANNIE AND JAKE HEATH

It's been quiet over here on Ida Street. In fact, if you've been paying attention, you might have noticed things have changed. My last name changed, my url redirects to a new space, my facebook page has been unpublished, and I've shifted my priorities. I've grown.

For the past seven years and twenty-seven days, this digital space has been my blog – first named Magical Simplicity, then Ida Street. I've shared some very weird posts, really thoughtful ones, really questionable fashion advice, and really fun DIYs. But for the past two years, it hasn't felt exactly right. I left Cincinnati. I got married. & there was something else lurking in my creative mind.

I finally identified it as Ida Blooms. I am the sole proprietor of a floral design and workshop entity focused on empowering the DIY bride and making flowers an achievable, accessible way to build relationships. I archived all of Ida Street Blog into a single folder (it's under the far right tab, for now), re-purposed the Squarespace platform, and refreshed the logo. Why? Because my mentality remains the same.

Ida Street was a place to document my growth, to learn, to share, and to love. I'm still doing that, just, in a new form. So, this is my last post. I've been working on it for a year. How fitting to post it today, on Jake & my's first anniversary, as a testament to our wedding and the day my new life began.

Thanks for the great ride, friends. Stay in touch.

Oh what a nightttttt.
Late December, Back in '63.
What a very special time for meeeee.
As I remember, what a night.

Ok, not all of that is actually right.
It was May 27, back in '17.
Ya, just (two months, errr four, I mean six... that is exactly) one year ago. Clearly, I've been working on this post for a long time. Ha!

But it WAS a very special time for me.
It was the day Jake and I got married.

It was the culmination of a lot of effort, by a lot of people. It was fantastic vendors, amazing individuals, and delicious food. It was a day of love, of emotion, of promise. It was my best friends, my family, and my guy.

It was the day I became part of a pair.
It was incredible.

But, that doesn't describe it well enough.
So here's the video & some pictures <3

My goodness, it is so fun to look back at these! I can't believe we've already been married for a year! My best friend and role model, Natalie Folchi of Folchi Creative, did us the great honor of photographing our wedding. I am so, so proud of her, and SO in love with the result. Her second shooter was my great California friend, Diana Lustig.

The video – oh dear lord, the video – was shot by Shane Harrison. The editing and resulting work of art was completed by one of my longest friends, Jenna Heaton.

Our cake was made by Cincinnati-based organic baker, Angie Phillips of Canteen Bakery. Our bouquets and flower girl crown were made by Katie Smith of Katie's Blooms. The rest of the flower arrangements, and even the boutonnieres, I assembled with my sister, sister-in-law, mother, and mother in law (FOrEsHAdoWInG). I got the flowers at bloomsbythebox.com and had them delivered the Thursday before our wedding.

Our caterer, Jeff Thomas of THE Jeff Thomas Catering, ROCKED THIS WORLD. He is an event planning guru and made our day absolutely us. Our donuts were by Holtman's, though I did have to tactfully avoid saying I was ordering for a wedding....

We held our mass at St. Stephen's Church. Reception was across the street at the Carnegie Center of Columbia Tusculum. This is a very special neighborhood for us, because Jake and I met just up the street, at my post-college apartment, almost exactly four years before our wedding.

My solo bridal shoot was held at the Queen City Vignette studios. This was also our back-up location for family photos, in case of rain. But luckily, the rain held, and we got to do those at Alms Park – in my old neighborhood of Columbia Tusculum (remember this blog post about the park, from a million years ago??).

My bridesmaids and I stayed at this gorgeous Airbnb in OTR the night before and morning of the wedding. Our makeup and hair team, Hannah Quirk and Chelsea Skurow from Salon Oakley, were dreams. The rehearsal dinner was at 50 West Production Works

Our stationary (invites, save the date, programs, etc) was the work of my talented littlest sister, Colleen Butler. Our "Hooray" cake topper was a gift from my two sisters' etsy shop, Hickory Twine. We had a great DJ (DJ CEO) and a live band (The Suede Jackets) who kept us dancing all night... with the help of an open bar by the awesome folks at DEPS Fine Wine and Liquor.

The bridesmaids ordered their dresses from Azazie.com. They had 50-some options to pick from in the color, material, and length I chose. My dress (ha, the real one, not this dress that almost was) and shoes were from BHLDN. I used a service called Once Wed to buy an unworn resale of the dress at a discount. I got alterations done here, in San Francisco, by Marissa at Tailor Maid. My veil was borrowed from a neighbor :)

My mom's dress was from BHLDN and my Mother in Law's dress was from Dillard's. The boys' suits were Tommy Hilfiger, modern-fit in plaid. We got them at Macy's. Their tie clips, ties, and Jake's bow tie were from The Tie Bar. Their crazy animal socks were from SockShop in Haight-Ashbury. My adorable flower girl got her boho dress on Etsy. Our super stylish ring bearer got his suspenders and bow tie on Amazon. Did he rock his vans or what?

Three days before the wedding, when our forecast said rain, we worked with The Alleen Co. to get a lighted tent for our patio. Best decision ever. Our guests loved it out there.

There are sooooo many vendors, friends/errand-runners, volunteers, and loved ones that made this day possible. They each own a piece of our heart for making our day a dream come true. & to all you awesome attendees.........

Ohhhhh what a niggghtt.

Life After the Wedding

Sydney Marie Photography

Well, guys, we're two months in. As of this week, I've been "Annie Heath" (in name, if not in legality) for eight whole weeks. Time for a life update: Jake and I are back in San Francisco. After a quick three days in Vancouver, we came straight to SF and jumped back into our life.

It was really hard coming down from our seven crazy months of wedding planning + whirlwind week as bride and groom, but more on that later.

In June, I accepted a new job (in the city, woot!) & Jake got a promotion. We took a week off for the Fourth of July and relaxed in Kewanee, Wisconsin. Ever heard of it? Neither had we, ha! It was a fun and quiet way to spend a few days together before we celebrated the wedding of two close friends at Elkhart Lake. We partied till the sun came up (lolz - til I took a red-wine-fueled nose dive into the basement bedroom at our VRBO) and spent the rest of the weekend on a rented pontoon boat with Jake's best college friends.

So, life after the wedding has been, overall..... good!
I think that's because our life before the wedding was good, too.

That's what I've learned, anyway. Because, for all the hoopla and emotion... and money... that goes into a wedding, it really means nothing for the rest of your marriage. Life after the wedding is only as good as life was before the wedding.

After all the guests leave, and the presents stop coming in the mail, and you start attending weddings that aren't your own.... your partner is the one thing you can carry with you.

Lucky for me, that leaves Jake.

But, here's the real question...
How did we end up with these magnificent photos?
Answer: Luck. & super talented Instagram friends.

A few years ago, I met the incredible Sydney Norberg over Instagram. She was coming to shoot photos in Cincinnati the week I was leaving it. I introduced her to my bestie, sighed – because, well you take a look at Sydney's Instagram handle and tell me how you'd feel missing the opportunity to shoot with her – and moved to SF.

Fast forward two years, and Sydney is HERE! Just for a vacation... but she squeezed in some time for a couple's shoot at Sutro Baths. & BONUS.... her uber-talented, incredible videpgrapher-friend, Ben Maurice, was traveling with her from New Zealand.

& that's how Jake and I received the very sweetest two month-a-versary gift that we could ever imagine: a styled shoot in the place where we began our life after the wedding.

Our real life.
In San Francisco.
Where we truly became "The Heaths."

P.S. Good luck trying not to melt while you watch Ben's video, below.

Thoughtful (Off The Registry) Wedding Gift & A GIVEAWAY

DSC_0030.jpg

GUYYYYYSSSSS, I'm getting married in NINE DAYS. What the actual heck!?!? Jake and I are so busy getting things ready. We didn't work with a wedding planner, so all the little final details to figure out are up to us. It's been a lot, but we cannot wait!

Just wanted to pop by to say hello and tell you about one of our favorite "non-registry" gifts. Happy Maps sent this customizable poster to Jake and I a few weeks ago and we are in love with the minimalist design.  Even though we aren't getting married in San Francisco, we decided that was the place we wanted to feature on our Happy Map. It's where we found our first home together and got engaged... plus, this is where we will come back and officially start our lives as THE HEATHS!

There's lots of customization you can do for your map (location, title, coordinates, color), so check it all out here. AND, as a wedding gift to me and Jake, Happy Maps has offered to host a giveaway! Enter the contest on this instagram post.  GOOD LUCK!

I'll announce the winner via instagram next Thursday (5/25), and get back on the blog when I'm a officially a MRS!

To win a Happy Map, like this photo on instagram and follow the rules listed in the post! I'll pick the winner next Thursday... right before I become half of "The Heaths"!

Happy Map provided c/o. All thoughts are my own.

Bachelorette Party (OMG!!!!!!!)

I guess I would say the coolest thing about having a professional photographer as a bestie is that my life looks FREAKING GLAMOROUS.

But in all seriousness, I am still coming off the high of my bachelorette party last weekend. It was the best weekend of my life (until the wedding replaces it a month from today, I'm sure). I've heard so many brides-to-be say that, and I always smiled and thought it was a little weird. In fact, I didn't want to have a bachelorette party. I thought it was too much to ask of my friends. I moved 2000 miles away and left most of my best friends in the midwest. How could I ask them to fly to California for just two days to celebrate with me when I will see them at the wedding in one month anyway?

But my sisters talked me into doing it, and I couldn't be more grateful. Honestly, to have so many of my friends, in such an absolutely bEaUTifuL place, in the midst of wine country... well I've just never felt more loved.

I'll post later about what we did to prep for the weekend, because my trio-MOH sisters and I learned A LOT about how to throw our first bach party.... but for now, here are some pics that Natalie took. Enjoy!

STOP! Before you buy your wedding dress online, read this....

I'm an online shopper. I prefer it to in-store shopping, actually. Clothes, beauty products, trash bags, plants, tools... anything I can buy online, I will. I've never really had a problem with it, either! Sure, sometimes the clothes I buy don't fit, but returning has always been a breeze.

Naturally, when it came time to buy a wedding dress... I turned first to the internet.

Call me naive, but I have a pretty "off-the-rack" body. I was embarrassed to strip down to my skivvies in front of my sisters, in-laws and mom. (That wedding bod is still a work-in-progress, guys!) And, since online shopping had been so good to me in the past, it seemed like the perfect solution.

I totally got scammed.

On Thanksgiving, with a little wine in my system and a belly full of mac n' cheese, I ordered a dress I had been stalking on Pinterest from a site called Amy's Bridal Shop. The site was... not the greatest. There was only a single picture of the dress (you can see it above), and it was very pixelated. But,"They're a small little boutique," I said to myself. "Probably don't have someone to build them a real site."

Ugh.

I checked out through Shopify. Four weeks passed. I sent a message to the email address that had sent my confirmation. A few days later, I received a reply. "Hi Annie, It will be there soon."

The dress arrived a few days before the holidays. I plopped it in my suitcase to bring to Ohio, and, over mimosas with my sisters and mom, we unpacked it.

Guys. It sucked. First and foremost, it was NOT the dress in the picture. There was a red permanent marker line down the side, about thirty layers of tulle and HOLY was it unflattering.

I scoured the website for a contact number. Nothing. I checked the links to their social channels, hoping to send a message through FB. Nope. All the icons, from Pinterest through Twitter and beyond, linked to nothing. I sent a nice note to the email address from before. Nothing. Weeks passed. I sent another, more angry one. Nothing. Another week passed. I sent a scathing email. Nothing.

Eventually, I had to contact Shopify, and they told me to report fraud to my bank. It's been three months. I still haven't gotten a refund and the not-dress is hanging in my room in Ohio as a huge poofy reminder of my mistake.

Guys, online shopping is great, and some people have had success with it even for their wedding dress, but I didn't.
So here's my advice: if you decide you want to buy your wedding dress online, read these tips first:

  • Make sure the site is connected to a legitimate store.
  • Find a clear contact number on the page. Call it to be sure it connects somewhere.
  • If at all possible, try the dress on at a physical store before you purchase.
  • Confirm that all the social media icons connect to a real social media account.
  • Look for clear refund and return policies listed prominently on the site.
  • Find positive reviews for the store and product before you hand over your credit card.

Planning a wedding brings a lot of emotions with it. It's easy to get swept up in it, and order a dress from a clearly scraped site. Don't make my mistake.

In the end, I found myself at a BHLDN Show Room. BHLDN is owned by Anthropologie and the show rooms are connected to a few select stores around the country. It was wonderful. I found a beautiful dress & there's no tulle in sight ;)
